Job Description: Welder / Fabricator

Phone Direct is actively recruiting for a skilled and reliable Welder / Fabricator to join a dynamic engineering and manufacturing team based in the Gatwick RH6 area. This is a fantastic opportunity for an individual with strong MIG and TIG welding experience to secure immediate, ongoing work with a reputable local employer involved in structural metalwork, bespoke fabrications, and assembly for various industrial sectors.

As a trusted staffing partner, Phone Direct specialises in matching talented tradespeople with businesses that value skill and dedication. Whether you're seeking a long-term contract, a temp-to-perm pathway, or flexible assignments around Gatwick, our local consultants are here to facilitate your next career move. We understand the specific demands of the welding and fabrication market in the South East and have a proven track record of placing candidates quickly and efficiently, much like our successful placements for Healthcare Assistants in Bolton and Recruitment professionals in Leeds.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Precision Fabrication & Welding: Reading and interpreting engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications to fabricate and assemble metal components and structures to exact tolerances.
  • MIG & TIG Welding Operations: Performing high-quality MIG (Metal Inert Gas) and TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding on a variety of materials including mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminium, ensuring strong, clean, and compliant welds.
  • Material Preparation & Finishing: Measuring, cutting, grinding, and preparing materials using powered and manual tools such as guillotines, band saws, angle grinders, and drill presses. Conducting post-weld finishing including grinding, polishing, and applying protective coatings.
  • Quality Control & Inspection: Conducting visual inspections of your own work and completed fabrications to ensure they meet quality standards, dimensional accuracy, and are free from defects. Maintaining detailed work records.
  • Workshop & Site Safety: Adhering strictly to all health and safety regulations, including COSHH, risk assessments, and PPE protocols. Maintaining a clean, organised, and hazard-free work environment. Participating in daily tool-box talks.
  • Collaboration & Teamwork: Working effectively as part of a workshop team, liaising with supervisors, engineers, and other tradespeople to ensure projects are completed on schedule and to the required standard.

Essential Skills & Experience Required

  • Proven Experience: A minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in a similar Welder/Fabricator role within a workshop, manufacturing, or engineering environment.
  • Core Welding Competencies: Demonstrable proficiency in MIG welding is essential. Additional experience with TIG welding, arc welding (MMA), or plasma cutting is highly desirable and may command a higher pay rate.
  • Technical & Practical Skills: Ability to read and work from technical drawings. Competence in using fabrication machinery (press brakes, rollers), measuring equipment, and hand/power tools.
  • Certifications & Tickets: Relevant welding certifications (e.g., coded welder status) are a significant advantage. A valid CSCS card (or equivalent) is required for site-based roles. Knowledge of building services maintenance standards can also be beneficial.
  • Personal Attributes: A strong focus on quality, safety, and attention to detail. Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently as well as part of a team. Physically fit for manual handling tasks.
