Key Responsibilities & Daily Duties

As a Refuse / Waste Operative, you will be an essential part of the local waste collection and street cleansing team. Your work directly impacts the environment and public health in Plymouth.

• Safe Waste Collection: Operating as part of a crew to manually collect household, commercial, and recycling waste from designated routes across Plymouth PL1 and neighbouring postcodes.
• Vehicle Operation & Safety: Assisting the driver with vehicle manoeuvres (like a HGV Class 1 Driver would for larger vehicles), performing pre-start checks on refuse collection vehicles (RCVs), and ensuring all safety protocols are followed.
• Manual Handling & Sorting: Lifting and carrying bins and bags of waste, which requires a good level of physical fitness. You may also be involved in basic sorting of recyclable materials at the kerbside.
• Public Interaction & Professionalism: Representing the service provider professionally, providing courteous assistance to residents, and reporting any issues such as missed collections or damaged bins.
• Street Cleansing Duties: Participating in litter picking, sweeping public areas, and clearing fly-tipping as required, ensuring public spaces are clean and tidy.
• Adherence to Health & Safety: Strictly following all COSHH regulations, wearing provided PPE (high-vis clothing, safety boots, gloves), and maintaining a safe working environment for yourself and the public at all times.
• End-of-Day Procedures: Ensuring the vehicle cab and crew area are clean, reporting any vehicle defects, and completing necessary paperwork or digital logs for the day's rounds.
