School Caretaker Jobs in Lutterworth LE17 | Immediate Start & Competitive Pay
Phone Direct is actively recruiting for a reliable and experienced School Caretaker for an immediate temporary-to-permanent placement at a primary school in Lutterworth LE17. This is an urgent, hands-on role perfect for skilled Building Services Maintenance professionals seeking a stable position with an ASAP start.
School Caretaker Job Description
Phone Direct, a leading recruitment and temporary staffing agency serving Lutterworth and the Midlands, is seeking a dedicated and practical School Caretaker for a vital role within a thriving local primary school. This position is central to ensuring the school environment is safe, clean, functional, and welcoming for pupils, staff, and visitors. Unlike a standard Hotel Porter role focused on guest services, a School Caretaker is the backbone of the school's physical operations, responsible for everything from basic maintenance and security to groundskeeping and logistical support during school events.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with hands-on skills in Building Services Maintenance to join a supportive educational community. The role is offered on a temporary basis with a strong view to becoming a permanent appointment for the right candidate, offering job security and a clear career path within school facilities management. We understand the local Lutterworth job market intimately and can connect you with roles that match your skills and lifestyle, much like we do for Office Assistant positions in nearby business parks. If you take pride in a job well done and want to contribute directly to a positive learning environment, we encourage you to apply today.
Key Responsibilities & Daily Duties
- Building Security & Safety: Open and secure the school premises daily, conduct regular safety checks, maintain fire safety equipment, and ensure all access points are secure. Act as a key holder for emergency call-outs.
- Routine Maintenance & Repairs: Perform minor repairs (e.g., fixing furniture, replacing light bulbs, unblocking drains, patching walls). Liaise with and supervise external contractors for larger works, ensuring compliance with school policies.
- Cleaning & Waste Management: Oversee the cleaning standards of the school, managing waste collection and recycling. Ensure classrooms, halls, and toilets are maintained to a high standard, sometimes undertaking cleaning duties directly.
- Grounds & External Areas: Maintain the school grounds, including basic gardening, leaf clearance, gritting paths in winter, and ensuring play areas are safe and free from hazards.
- Logistical Support & Porterage: Move furniture and equipment for events, assemblies, or classroom changes. Manage deliveries and stock control of cleaning and maintenance supplies. Set up rooms for meetings, parents' evenings, and school functions.
Essential Skills & Requirements
- Proven Experience: Previous experience as a School Caretaker, Building Services Maintenance operative, or in a similar hands-on facilities role is essential. Experience within an educational or public building setting is a significant advantage.
- Practical Skills & DIY Ability: Competence in basic DIY, plumbing, electrical awareness (changing fittings), and general maintenance. Ability to use hand and power tools safely. A valid UK driving licence is often beneficial.
- Safety & Compliance Mindset: A strong understanding of Health & Safety regulations, including COSHH, manual handling, and safeguarding procedures relevant to a school environment. A DBS check will be required (we can assist with this).
- Personal Attributes: Reliability, trustworthiness, and a proactive"can-do" attitude. Excellent communication skills to interact with staff, children, and visitors. The ability to work independently, prioritise tasks, and respond effectively to emergencies.

This includes general maintenance, DIY skills, basic plumbing/electrical awareness, and an understanding of health & safety. Experience in a school, public building, or facilities maintenance role is highly desirable. A proactive attitude and reliability are just as important as technical skills for this community-facing role.
Yes, an enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check is a mandatory requirement for any role working in a school environment. The good news is that as part of our service, Phone Direct can guide you through the application process and, in many cases, sponsor or facilitate the check, making it quicker and smoother for you to become compliant and ready to start.
Typical school caretaker hours are split shifts (e.g., early morning and late afternoon) to cover opening/closing, often totaling 30-37 hours per week during term time. There may be occasional weekend or evening work for school events, maintenance projects, or emergency call-outs, for which overtime or time-in-lieu is usually offered. The exact pattern will be confirmed during the interview.
