Hospital Porter Job Description

As a Hospital Porter in Nottingham NG2, you will be an essential part of the hospital's operational backbone. Your role is crucial in ensuring the smooth, safe, and efficient movement of patients, equipment, and supplies throughout the healthcare facility. This is a physically active and highly rewarding position where you make a tangible difference to patient care and hospital logistics every single day.

Phone Direct partners with major NHS Trusts and private healthcare providers across the East Midlands to fill these critical support roles. We understand the unique demands of hospital porters and seek candidates who are not only strong and reliable but also compassionate and professional. If you're looking for a role with purpose, variety, and the chance to work within a dedicated team, this could be your ideal opportunity. For those seeking different but equally vital support roles, we also recruit for positions like Hospital Receptionist and Medical Receptionist.

Key Responsibilities & Daily Duties

  • Patient Transportation: Safely and respectfully move patients between wards, departments (e.g., X-ray, MRI, theatres), and outpatient clinics using wheelchairs, beds, and trolleys. This includes ensuring patient comfort and dignity during transit and adhering to all infection control protocols.
  • Logistics & Courier Services: Transporting medical records, laboratory specimens (bloods, pathology samples), pharmacy deliveries, and sterile supplies to the correct clinical areas in a timely manner. Understanding the urgency and confidentiality of certain items is paramount.
  • Equipment Handling: Moving and setting up heavy medical equipment such as oxygen tanks, patient monitors, and portable scanning machines. You will also be responsible for the collection and delivery of beds, lockers, and other ward furniture.
  • Morgue & Linen Duties: Assisting with the respectful and dignified transfer of deceased patients to the mortuary. Handling and distributing clean and soiled linen in accordance with strict health and safety regulations.
  • Portering Requests & Communication: Responding promptly to portering requests via hospital radio/paging systems. Maintaining clear and professional communication with nursing staff, clinicians, and the portering control office throughout your shift.
  • Maintenance of a Clean Environment: While not a cleaning role, porters often assist in keeping corridors clear and may be involved in basic tasks to ensure a safe environment, such as reporting spills or hazards.

Essential Skills & Person Specification

To succeed as a Hospital Porter in Nottingham, you will need a blend of physical capability and interpersonal skills. We are looking for candidates who embody the following:

Physical & Practical Requirements

  • Good level of physical fitness and the ability to safely manoeuvre heavy loads and patients.
  • Understanding of manual handling techniques (training provided).
  • Reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
  • Ability to follow instructions and procedures meticulously.
  • A valid, clean UK driving licence can be beneficial for some roles.

  • Excellent communication skills and a compassionate, patient-facing manner.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Discretion, confidentiality, and respect for patients and colleagues.
  • Calm under pressure and adaptable to a fast-paced, changing environment.
  • A proactive and helpful attitude.

Essential viewing: Workplace safety and first aid knowledge is invaluable in a hospital environment.

While previous hospital experience is a definite advantage, it is not always essential. We value reliability, physical fitness, and a compassionate attitude above all. Many successful porters come from backgrounds in warehouse work, delivery driving, or other manual roles. We provide all necessary training, including manual handling and infection control, to ensure you are fully prepared for the role. A willingness to learn and adhere to strict procedures is key.

Hospitals operate 24/7, so there is a wide variety of shifts. Common patterns include early (6 am - 2 pm), late (2 pm - 10 pm), and night shifts (10 pm - 6 am). There are also part-time and weekend-only opportunities. During registration, we discuss your availability and match you with shifts that suit you. Flexibility is highly valued and can often lead to more hours. For those seeking purely remote work, we also list Remote Customer Support roles.

A standard uniform (usually a tunic/trousers) and suitable safety footwear are provided by the hospital or agency. You will be required to have an enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check. Phone Direct can apply for a new DBS on your behalf, or we can check the status of an existing certificate via the Update Service. There is usually a cost associated with a new application, which we will discuss with you upfront. This is a mandatory requirement for all patient-facing roles.

We operate a simple, reliable weekly payroll. You will submit your timesheet at the end of your working week (usually Friday). Once approved by the client, you will be paid directly into your bank account the following week. We use a transparent system, so you can see your hourly rate, hours worked, and any deductions clearly on your payslip. There are no hidden fees for our candidates.
