Job Description: Learning Support Assistant

Phone Direct is partnering with respected primary and secondary schools across the Glasgow G1 area to recruit dedicated and compassionate Learning Support Assistants. This is a pivotal role where you will provide essential one-to-one and small group support to pupils with additional learning needs, helping them to access the curriculum, build confidence, and achieve their full potential.

As a specialist in education recruitment, Phone Direct connects talented support staff with schools that value their skills. Whether you're an experienced Learning Support Assistant or looking to start a rewarding career in education, we offer a streamlined registration process, ongoing support from a dedicated consultant, and access to the best temporary and long-term roles in Glasgow. Much like our successful placements for Healthcare Assistants in Bolton or Recruitment professionals in Leeds, we ensure a perfect match between candidate and school.

Key Responsibilities & Daily Duties

Your day will be dynamic and varied, focused on enabling student success. Core responsibilities include:

  • Providing tailored academic support to individual pupils or small groups, both inside and outside the mainstream classroom, adapting teaching materials to suit their learning styles.
  • Implementing and monitoring Education, Health and Care (EHCP) plans under the guidance of the class teacher and SENCO, tracking progress and providing detailed feedback.
  • Promoting positive behaviour and social inclusion, helping pupils to develop communication skills, manage emotions, and build positive relationships with peers.
  • Assisting with personal care and physical needs where required, ensuring all pupils can participate safely and comfortably in all school activities.
  • Preparing learning resources and sensory equipment, and helping to maintain a safe, stimulating, and organised learning environment.
  • Collaborating closely with teachers, therapists, and parents to provide a consistent and holistic support network for each child.

Essential Requirements & Skills

To be successful in this Learning Support Assistant role in Glasgow, you will need:

  • Proven experience in a similar role within a UK school setting, or substantial transferable experience from care, support work, or youth work.
  • A genuine passion for supporting children with additional needs, demonstrating boundless patience, empathy, and resilience.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build rapport with children, teachers, and parents.
  • A basic understanding of the UK curriculum and special educational needs (SEND), including Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), ADHD, and speech & language difficulties.
  • A valid, enhanced DBS certificate registered on the Update Service, or the willingness to apply for one immediately through Phone Direct.
  • The right to work in the UK and the ability to provide professional references covering the last two years.
