Key Responsibilities & Duties

The successful candidate will be responsible for a range of skilled bricklaying tasks, ensuring high-quality workmanship on every job. Your primary duties will include:

• Interpreting construction drawings and plans to accurately set out the first course of bricks or blocks, using string lines, spirit levels, and laser levels to ensure perfect alignment and dimensions.
• Mixing mortar to the correct consistency and specification, applying it skillfully with a trowel, and laying bricks, blocks, or stone in courses to build walls, arches, chimneys, and other structures.
• Cutting and shaping materials using powered disc cutters, bolsters, and hammers to fit around openings, pipes, or for decorative purposes, ensuring minimal waste and a clean finish.
• Pointing and finishing joints using various techniques (flush, weatherstruck, recessed) to create a weatherproof and aesthetically pleasing finish that meets building regulations.
• Working collaboratively with other trades on site, such as carpenters, plumbers, and construction labourers, to ensure the project progresses smoothly and efficiently, maintaining clear communication at all times.
• Adhering strictly to all health and safety regulations on site, including wearing appropriate PPE, securing work areas, and following safe working practices for manual handling and using tools and machinery.
• Maintaining tools and equipment in a clean, safe, and serviceable condition, reporting any defects immediately and ensuring your work area is kept tidy to prevent accidents.

What We're Looking For: Essential Requirements

To be considered for this Bricklayer position in Chester, you should possess the following skills and attributes:

• Proven experience as a time-served Bricklayer, with a solid portfolio of completed work, preferably within the UK construction industry. A recognised apprenticeship or NVQ Level 2/3 in Bricklaying is highly advantageous.
• Expert knowledge of different brick types, bonding patterns, and mortar mixes, with the ability to work accurately, neatly, and at a good pace to meet project deadlines.
• Valid CSCS card (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) is essential for access to most sites. A full UK driving licence and reliable transport are also required due to the varied locations of sites around Chester CH1.
• Excellent physical fitness and stamina for manual work in all weather conditions, with a strong focus on safety and a proactive attitude towards identifying and mitigating risks on site.
• A team-player mentality with strong communication skills, coupled with the ability to work independently using your own initiative when required. Reliability and a strong work ethic are non-negotiable.
